On the wide veranda of an old Nakasero house, three young poets are paired with three elders. Each pair trades a story in Luganda, Acholi or English, and the room translates for each other.

The evening closes with an open circle where anyone may offer a proverb from home.

The Curator’s Endorsement

“A rare room where a nineteen-year-old poet and a seventy-year-old storyteller get the same attention.”

The Tokutana Curatorial Board

The Intentionality Pledge

Every host answers these before a gathering is published, and is held to them afterwards.

Why it exists

Our grandparents' stories are disappearing faster than our languages. This exists so the young and the old hear each other in the tongue the story was born in.

The ritual

  • Finger snaps instead of applause
  • No recording of the elders without their blessing
  • Every speaker is introduced by their pair, not by themselves

The afterglow

On the ride home, you should feel Quietly Introspective.

How the host measures success

Guests leave with a proverb they did not know, and at least one elder asks to come back.

The vibe

Four dimensions, set by the host and checked by our curators.
